Originally launched in 1986 and quietly revived nationwide in 2021, Maruef is the gentle, mellow counterpoint to Asahi Super Dry.
The name “Maruef” traces to an internal development code. Long surviving in the shadow of Super Dry, this beer's loyal fanbase eventually pulled it back into national distribution.
Launched in 1986 as Asahi Draft Beer, then overshadowed by Super Dry's 1987 success, it survived in commercial channels for decades. In 2021, responding to persistent fan demand, Asahi reintroduced it as “Asahi Draft Beer (Maruef)” for cans and bottles nationwide.
Balanced malt and hops with a soft, mellow palate. The opposite of Super Dry's sharpness — restrained bitterness with a faint malt sweetness on the finish. ABV 4.5%, lower than typical lagers.
Excellent with delicate Japanese cuisine — soba, udon, sushi, sashimi. The gentle profile doesn't interfere with dashi umami. Better with simmered or steamed dishes than fried.
Serve at 5-7°C in a tumbler or small mug. The lower ABV makes it ideal for pacing through a long soba or sushi meal.
