Born in 1842 in Pilsen, Czech Republic, as the world's first pilsner. Every pilsner-style beer worldwide traces its lineage to this single beer.
“Urquell” means “original” in German. Every golden pilsner around the world started here.
In 1842, German brewer Josef Groll perfected the world's first golden lager at the Pilsen Citizens' Brewery. Before this, most beers were murky brown — pilsner became the global default lager style.
Generously hopped with Czech Saaz, with firm bitterness and floral aromas. Beautifully balanced with malt sweetness; the finish is taut. ABV 4.4%. The benchmark for the world's lagers.
In the Czech Republic, “tank beer” (unfiltered and unpasteurized) is highly prized but only available at select venues. A handful of Japanese specialty bars serve it on draft — a strikingly different experience.
Excellent with sausages, sauerkraut, schnitzel, and goulash. In Japan, pairs with yakitori, yakiniku, gyoza, and fried foods. The hop bitterness cuts through fat.
Now owned by Asahi Holdings (acquired 2017). Still brewed at the original site in Pilsen — the authentic taste is preserved.
